Explained: No app for 28 y/o Wolves man in 3 years, frozen out of squad, could leave in July

Phil Ofosu-Ayeh could be on his way out of Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer, ending a nightmarish three years at Molineux. The 28-year-old hasn’t made an appearance since joining the club from Eintracht Braunschweig and has spent the majority of his time out on loan, injured and frozen out under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Ofoso-Ayeh has led the most nomadic career, playing for SV Wilhelmshaven, VfB Oldenburg, Rot-Weiß Erfurt, MSV Duisburg, VfR Aalen, Braunschweig, Wolves, FC Hansa Rostock and Würzburger Kickers. As per Transfermarkt, he’s made only 11 appearances in all competitions in the last three years, none of which have come in Wolves colours.

The right-back picked up an ankle injury in his debut season at Molineux and underwent surgery that kept him out for most of the campaign. He was loaned out to Rostock (August 31, 2018 – January 30, 2019) and the Kickers (January 31, 2019 – June 30, 2019) before returning to Wolves last summer.

Ofoso-Ayeh is back in the Midlands, but Nuno has frozen him out of the first-team and omitted him from the Premier League and Europa League squads. His contract is up in the summer and it’s hard to see him staying past 2020 after a disappointing stint in England.

Matt Doherty is Nuno’s first-choice at right-back while Oskar Buur is now second-choice, so Wolves don’t have a need to keep Ofosu-Ayeh. His handful of appearances in the U23s didn’t convince Nuno to hand him first-team opportunities, so a parting of the ways in July looks likely.

The 28-year-old could be joining the tenth club of his career this summer.
