Explained: How much Thiago Silva would cost Wolves without taking a pay cut

|

Wolverhampton Wanderers are on the hunt for a central defender this summer and have been linked with Kristoffer Ajer, Gabriel Magalhaes, Christian Luyindama, Ousseynou Ba, Tosin Adarabioyo, Ruben Dias, Diego Llorente, Nicolas N’Koulou and Robin Koch, but Thiago Silva is the latest to pop up on their radar.

The 35-year-old has left Paris Saint-Germain after eight years and is available on a free transfer, but he won’t come cheap given his lofty wage demands so Wolves may have a difficult decision to make.

Which club did Wolves sign Raul Jimenez from?

According to the Telegraph, Silva earned £15.6m-a-year/£300k-per-week at PSG, so he would be taking home three times more than Wolves’ highest-earners Joao Moutinho (£5.2m-a-year/£100k-per-week) and Rui Patricio (£5.2m-a-year/£100k-per-week).

The Brazilian international wants a two-year deal at his next club too, so Wolves could be paying £30m to bring Silva to Molineux. He turns 36 in September, so it would be a big financial gamble.

The Telegraph did say the central defender is open to taking a pay cut to join a Premier League side, but Wolves would need him to trim his salary by 66% to keep him in line with their other players. It remains to be seen whether Silva would accept that much of a cut, however.
