According to Birmingham Live, Wolverhampton Wanderers are ‘on the look-out’ for a new centre-back after offloading Kortney Hause, Ethan Ebanks-Landell, Sylvain Deslandes, Jesus Vallejo while loaning out Roderick Miranda without bringing in enough replacements.

Nuno Espirito Santo has Conor Coady, Willy Boly, Max Kilman, Romain Saiss, Leander Dendoncker, Dion Sanderson and Ryan Bennett at his disposal, but Kilman isn’t commanding a starting place, Dendoncker is a natural midfielder, Sanderson will be loaned out next season and Bennett may be surplus to requirements.

Which club did Wolves sign Raul Jimenez from?

Wolves have been linked with Kristoffer Ajer, Gabriel Magalhaes, Christian Luyindama, Ousseynou Ba, Tosin Adarabioyo, Ruben Dias, Diego Llorente, Nicolas N’Koulou, Robin Koch, so it appears they’re mostly looking to sign younger talent rather than sign expensive and ageing alternatives.

Nuno has preferred three central defenders (Coady, Boly, Saiss) for most of the season, forcing Dendoncker to be used in a makeshift role as cover. With the Wolves manager often naming three central midfielders too, the squad has been stretched then.

Kilman has been handed a new deal until 2022, but it remains to be seen if he’d be a regular in defence if a first-teamer was injured. Bruno Jordao and Morgan Gibbs-White are backup midfielders, but neither is on the level of Ruben Neves or Joao Moutinho.

So Wolves desperately need recruits and must strengthen at the back to push Dendoncker in midfield again. Saiss can operate in both roles in an emergency.
