Yesterday evening Wolverhampton Wanderers kicked off our pre-season schedule of games this summer and took victory over 20-time Swiss Champions FC Basil at Biel’s Tissot Arena.

Ricky Van Wolfswinkel may be a familiar name for some but he gave last season’s runners-up the lead after only nine minutes had been played in the first half. Rafa Mir has us level ten minutes later and a goal from Diogo Jota secured us a 2-1 win from our opening match of the Uhrencup tournament.

As is often these days, head coach Nuno Espirito Santo played two sides in each half to get a good 45 minutes into as many players as possible, so all in it was a good start to 2018/19 for us and it’s certainly reignited the optimism within the fanbase with us picking up the win at the first time of asking.

We now prepare for a trip to Bern on Saturday to face Swiss Champions Young Boys and a win would see us pick up our second trophy of 2018 – can’t remember what the other one was now actually?

First half:

Ruddy, Batth (C), Hause, John, Buur, Giles, Goncalves, Giles, Mir, Ashley-Seal, Cavaleiro.

Second half:

Norris, Bennett, Cody, Boly, Doherty, Gibbs-White, Neves, Douglas, Costa, Bonatini, Jota.

Wolves goals: Mir (17), Jota (51).
Basel goal: Van Wolfswinkel (9).
Attendance: 1,724.

I know you should never overly read into the first few pre-season games, but Cavaleiro starting the first half could be an answer the speculation that keeps being rehashed about his future. Whether or not you read into that, not that fans needed much help, the result was certainly a boost.
