Wolverhampton Wanderers were given the Wednesday evening midweek slot for our EFL Cup third round clash with Championship side Reading.

Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo made plenty of changes for the game and there were a number of youngsters on display once again. Summer signing Bruno Jordao got us off the mark in the 27th minute to send us into the break with the 1-0 advantage.

Although ultimately Reading edged the game on possession and chances, we did end the game down at ten men as Meritan Shabani left the pitch with an injury after we’d used our full complement of substitutes, we almost saw stoppage time through.

Sadly for us, Reading equalised nine minutes into injury time so the game automatically went to penalties.

Wolves pens:

Neves goal, Vallejo scored, Bennett scored, Vinagre scored.

Reading pens:

Puscas scored, Swift saved, Boye missed, Miazga scored.

Speaking to the BBC following the full time whistle, head coach Nuno Espirito Santo said of the game.

“Shabani looks like a long one, he is now being analysed by the doctor, then we will know what happened but it looks bad. We don’t know yet. Jordao’s is a different situation – someone fell on him and he twisted his ankle. The second half was not so good and after, when we went to 10 men, and Reading were pushing, it becomes harder.”

So it’s Aston Villa next – let the games begin.
