Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo saw his Wolverhampton Wanderers side take a second victory over Manchester United on Tuesday evening as we backed up the FA Cup win with all three points from the Premier League encounter.
Welcoming Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to the Molineux for the match, there’s no denying the visitors had the better of the game, but football is about taking your opportunities when they come along and we did just that with Diogo Jota finding the net and an own goal in our favour as we completed a comeback to take a 2-1 win.
It was an organised and resilient showing from Wolves, and our task was made slightly easier as they were reduced to ten men in the second half as Ashley Young was punished for two bookable offences.
Former United (and West Bromwich Albion) player Darren Fletcher was on pundit duty for Sky Sports (via the E&S) for their live coverage of the game, and his summation of the match simply came over as sour grapes.
“I think they (United) started the second half in the ascendancy. But they’ve gifted the game to Wolves, the red card and the first goal. That’s all Wolves have done in the game, but mistakes have been punished. In the FA Cup, Wolves were better, but United were better here.”
Adding about the red card.
“The letter of the law it’s a red, but he hasn’t been helped out. When you’ve been drilled to stop the counter attack, he (Young) will be annoyed. It’s easy to say to let him run past but to be sent off in the game for those only two fouls, it is disappointing.”
It’s a bit rich really given how often United steal points by the narrowest of margins, and many fans also rightly pointed out the second yellow for Young could’ve easily been a straight red. Statistics in a game don’t always tell the whole story, and it certainly doesn’t when it came to this game.
I think Darren Fletcher has lost his grip on reality with comments like these????????????????♂️
I hope for his sake he’s got it back this morning & realises his beloved Man Utd were simply beaten by a better team……give credit where credit is due!!???? https://t.co/gi4pQS6qQd

Lack of class and humility from Olé and Darren Fletcher. It's as though they've watched a different game. Fletcher particularly speaking like we should be grateful to be on the same pitch as #MUFC , embarrassing and arrogant #WOLMUN #WWFC #COYW
