Wolverhampton Wanderers have been linked with a move for Gonzalo Higuain this summer, as Raul Jimenez has been tipped to leave. Wolves selling such a valuable player would be surprising enough, but it’s unlikely Higuain will be signed as a replacement given his advancing age, poor form, lofty market value and salary demands.
Higuain joined Juventus in 2016 and has gone on to make 139 appearances in all competitions, scoring 63 goals and making 16 assists. The 32-year-old was loaned out to AC Milan (August 2, 2018 – January 22, 2019) and Chelsea (January 23, 2019 – June 30, 2019) last season and has struggled ever since he returned to Turin.
Higuain has scored just five goals in 23 Serie A games this season, but those five goals are all he’s managed in the Italian top-flight since December 2018. Transfermarkt say his market value is £22.95m while CIES range his valuation between €20m-€30m (£17.89m-£26.84m).
He’d be Wolves’ second most expensive signing at that price. And with an annual salary of £5m-a-year/£96k-per-week, Higuain would also be Wolves’ third-highest earner. Spending so much money on an out-of-form striker wouldn’t be good business this summer, so it’s hard to see a deal ever getting over the line.
