Wolves have completed the signing of defender Nelson Semedo from Barcelona, the Premier League club have announced.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side had been in need of a right-back following the departure of Matt Doherty to Tottenham earlier this summer, and they have now got their man.

The club confirmed on Wednesday morning that they have now completed the signing of Semedo, who made 124 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona, after joining from Benfica in his native Portugal in the summer of 2017.

Semedo has put pen to paper on an initial three-year deal with Wolves, with the option to extend that contract by a further two years, effectively securing his future at Molineux until the end of the 2024/25 season.

Speaking to the club’s official website following confirmation of the move, Semedo said: “I chose Wolves because it’s a very good team that plays very good football. Last year they did a very good season and it’s a very important team in England, in also Europe. I hope this year we can do very good things.

“Coach Nuno is a very good coach. He did very good things here in Wolves, and in other teams too. For sure I’m going to learn a lot from him.”

Looking ahead to what he expects during his time at Wolves, the Portuguese international added: “The team did very good things the last three years. I’m ambitious and I hope this year we can do very good things, reach the top six and, if it’s possible, do something special.

“I’m very happy to be here. I’m excited to get started and thank you very much for your support and we’re going to enjoy it together.”

While the official cost of the deal is undisclosed, recent reports from Spain have claimed that the deal could eventually cost the club somewhere in the region of €40million.

It is good to see that Wolves have now got this deal over the line, given the need they had for a right-back after Doherty’s exit earlier in the summer.

In Semedo, they are getting an established, high-profile player to fill that role, further strengthening Nuno’s side as they look to compete for a place in Europe again this season, and this feels like something of a statement of intent in regards to that.
