Official: Wolves confirm new deal for 20 y/o, defender’s ‘option has been extended’

|

Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed a new deal for Cameron John, revealing the 20-year-old’s ‘option has been extended’ for another season. John was coming to the end of a two-year deal signed in August 2018, but he’s progressed enough to warrant keeping.

The centre-back has risen from the U18s and U23s to the fringes of the first-team and was loaned out to League One for more competitive football – a decision that has boosted his reputation. John can’t rest on his laurels, however, as he must prove his worth in 2020/21 to be retained.

The 20-year-old joined Wolves from Southend in 2015 and has gone on to make 28 appearances for the U18s and 39 appearances for the U23s. He’s also made the first-team’s matchday squad where he was an unused substitute in Wolves’ 3-1 win over Everton (February 2, 2019).

John outgrew youth football and was loaned out to Doncaster Rovers last summer to take his development to new heights. The decision paid off as he made 21 appearances for the League One outfit, scoring three goals and making one assist.

The centre-back has a tough task of getting first-team football with Romain Saiss, Leander Dendoncker, Conor Coady, Willy Boly and Max Kilman for competition, but he’s progressing well so far and may be in Nuno Espirito Santo’s sights.
