Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo is holding off on signing a new contract with the club, due to concerns over a lack of transfer funds, a report from The Daily Mirror has claimed.

It has been a frustrating window for Wolves so far, with the club yet to make a signing, while it was confirmed on Sunday that long-serving defender Matt Doherty – who Nuno reportedly saw as a key member of his squad – has joined Tottenham on a permanent deal.

According to the latest reports, that has forced Nuno to consider his future at the club, despite the fact he is desperate to push on after a hugely successful past few seasons at the club.

The Portuguese manager has less than a year remaining on his current contract at Molineux, and is apparently stalling on signing a new three-year deal, due to concerns over whether he will be given the backing to replace Doherty and strengthen his squad, with owners Fosun International said to be insisting that the books are balanced at the club first.

That is something that Nuno believes risks hampering the club’s progress going forward, which is thought to have had forced the 46-year-old to consider his own future at the club.

It is hard to feel that losing Nuno would be anything short of a disaster for Wolves moving on, with the Portuguese boss having been absolutely vital to the success the club have enjoyed in the past few years.

Indeed, it would be a damning reflection on the owners if they were to lose Nuno in such circumstances, and you have to wonder where that leave the club going forward, both in terms of finding a new manager, and transfer in and out of the squad.

But having put so much effort in at Molineux and seen it pay off in such emphatic circumstances, you can’t really blame Nuno for his current attitude, and you hope that more than anything else, this is something that sparks the club’s recruitment drive into life this summer.
