Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Wolves defender Matt Doherty on a permanent deal, the North London club have announced.
Doherty joined Wolves from Bohemians 2010, and served the club with distinction for the next decade, making just over 300 appearances for the club, helping to take them from League One to the Europa League in that time.
However, the Irishman’s long association with the club has now come to an end, with Tottenham confirming the signing of the 28-year-old ahead of the new season.
The full-back has now put pen to paper on a four-year deal with Spurs, which will keep him at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until the end of the 2023/24 season.
Although the official price of the deal has not been disclosed, previous reports have suggested that Spurs will pay Wolves around £14.7million for the Republic of Ireland international.
Given the importance Doherty had to Wolves’ squad, and the fact he still had years remaining on his deal at Molineux, this feels like a rather small price to let him go for, particularly to a rival in the battle fir a European place next season.
That is something that is not going to go down well with the club’s fanbase, considering both Doherty’s popularity around the club, and the fact that the current size of Nuno’s squad means they really ought to be adding players, rather than letting them go.
With that in mind, it will be interesting to see just what the club are able to do with the funds they have received for Doherty, as the pressure on them in the window continues to grow.
