Cardiff City boss Neil Harris has confirmed his Championship side are considering a move to keep Wolverhampton Wanderers prospect Dion Sanderson on loan for a second season.

Sanderson joined Cardiff on loan for the second half of 2019/20 season and helped the Bluebirds to reach the Play-Off Semi-Finals, where they would eventually bow out to Fulham as the Cottagers went on to secure their return to the Premier League.

Harris frequently called on Sanderson to feature in his plans either side of the enforced break in play, with the 20-year-old given minutes in ten fixtures of which he started nine.

Cardiff are expected to have to play on the loan market heavily this summer as finances will dictate much of their transfer activity, opening the door for Sanderson to continue his development in south Wales.

“I know full well I’ve not got a transfer pot to spend in abundance,” Harris told BBC Sport Wales.

“There’s possibly the opportunity for him [Sanderson] to stay with us [on loan] moving forward.

“Realistically the football industry, even the Championship, is going to be based on loan players, free transfers and probably swapping players as well – which we don’t often see in this country but is a real realistic element we could see moving forward.”

Nuno Espirito Santo is not expected to thrust Sanderson into his plans next season, despite the Wednesfield-born centre-half being rated highly at Molineux, making another loan move the most likely option in the 20-year-old’s immediate future.

Wolves chiefs will likely strive for certain assurances from Cardiff before sanctioning another loan spell, though, as Harris only deployed Sanderson at right-back during the defender’s spell in south Wales.

Sanderson had only ever played as a right-back sparingly during his time in Wolves’ academy ranks, with the 20-year-old instead accumulating much of his game time as a centre-half and captaining the Under 18s and 23s sides in the position.
