Wolverhampton Wanderers are holding off any formal discussions to sign Burnley winger Dwight McNeil during the summer transfer window, according to The Athletic.

Wolves are among a clutch of European sides eying McNeil as a potential option during the summer transfer window, with the Burnley winger’s stock continually rising after an impressive season at Turf Moor.

McNeil missed just 76 minutes of game time across the 2019/20 Premier League campaign as manager Sean Dyche put a great deal of faith in the 20-year-old who graduated from the Clarets’ academy two years ago.

The former Manchester United trainee is also seen as a rare breed in England being a left-footed midfielder, while also ending the recent term having shouldered much of the attacking responsibility’s in Dyche’s Burnley side.

No Clarets player recorded more key passes (57), big chances created (12), accurate crosses (70) or passes leading to an assist (2) than McNeil did during the 2019/20 season, while only Ashley Westwood (6) could boast as many assists or more accurate passes in the final third (368 to 263), per Sofa Score data.

McNeil’s output is believed to have piqued the intrigue of Wolves, as well as Leicester City, Juventus, AC Milan and a range of unnamed sides – including clubs among the Premier League’s traditional ‘big six’ – though neither outfit are yet to formalise their position.

All of the named sides are believed to hold ‘genuine interest’ in McNeil’s availability, so it remains to be seen if any step forward with an official offer or request for further information.

Wolves, along with Leicester and Everton, have previously been put forward as potential suitors for McNeil, with claims from last November suggesting sides were ready to test the Clarets’ resolve with Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers the ‘most strongly considering’ a move.

Burnley, at the time, were said to value the England U21 international at £30million and would be in a strong position to hold firm at that figure this summer after McNeil enjoyed an eight-goal Premier League season.

McNeil added to his six assists with two goals, with one of which coming against Chelsea despite Burnley being thrashed 4-2 on home soil as Christian Pulisic made Turf Moor his playground with a hat-trick.

McNeil also recorded Burnley’s most dribbles in the Premier League this season (77) with a 54.23% success rate, while also taking 32 shots, hitting the woodwork twice, made 47 tackles, 30 interceptions, won a team-high 163 ground duels (44.29%) and was fouled 39 times.
