With some speculation on the rumour mill with the summer transfer window now in full flow suggesting that Wolverhampton Wanderers are in a three way battle with West Ham United and Everton for Benfica fullback Andre Almeida, a recent report has claimed that we are in pole position to secure his services.

The 28-year-old versatile Portuguese defender made 46 appearances for his current side across the season of 2018/19, more than playing his part in helping them to lift the title ahead of Porto and he does have two years remaining on his existing deal. It’s believed that they would cash in though for a fee of around £8million and the Express have now claimed – rather predictably I must say – that with our existing Portuguese core, that would naturally give us an advantage in the chase for the player as he’d find it easier to settle in at the club.

There’s also the obligatory reference to Jorge Mendes, but the report lacks any concrete details – but that seems the way of football these days. If there is any truth to this rumour it’s down to his versatility of being capable of playing both fullback positions, along with defensive midfield.
