Report claims Europa League club have agreed deal to sign Wolves man

|

Tottenham have agreed a fee with Wolves for the signing of defender Matt Doherty, according to a report from Football Insider.

Spurs pipped Wolves to sixth in the Premier League table, and with it a place in the Europa League for next season, and now it seems they are set to raid Molineux for one of their key men last season as well.

Doherty made 50 appearances in all competitions for Nuno’s side across the course of the 2019/20 campaign, but it now looks as though he could be about to move on this summer.

According to the latest reports, Tottenham have agreed a deal to sign Doherty for an initial fee of £12million, which could the rise to as much as £16million with add-ons.

It is thought that Spurs boss Jose Mourinho wants Doherty to replace Serge Aurier as the club’s first-choice right-back, with the Frenchman expected to leave North London this summer.

If Doherty is to leave Wolves this summer, it will be sad to see him go.

The Irishman has been a fantastic servant throughout his ten-year spell at Molineux, making just over 300 appearances in all competitions for the club.

There is still no question that he can play at the highest level, as he showed last season, and with that in mind, it does seem rather strange that he is set to be sold to a rival club such as Tottenham.

Even so, it does look as though this deal will at least bring in some funds for Nuno to hopefully use to strengthen the squad in the transfer market, and it will be interesting to see exactly how they are used in the coming weeks.
