Plenty of striking options

Lets go back around 10 months and look at the forwards Wolves had – Leon Clarke, Jay Bothroyd, Craig Davies, Carl Cort and Jemal Johnson. Now lets fast forward to present and 3 of those no longer play for the club, 1 is on his way out and only Jay Bothroyd remains a first teamer.

With Stephen Elliot joining, for a reported £1.1m, the options at Wolves are now very impressive. Andy Keogh, one of the hardest working forwards you will see and a firm fans favourite. Stephen Ward, a talent and certainly one for the future, Jay Bothroyd, the way he responded to Ward and Keogh and fought he was back in, was impressive and a good sign for the future and then there is Freddie Eastwood. A £2m player who has scored at every level he has played. The current 5 strikers certainly looks better than last years effort.

So who will get the nod? The obvious strike pair is Keogh and Eastwood. With Bothroyd and Elliot as back up. Where does this leave Ward? He made an instant impact on his entry to the starting line up but visible tired and saw Bothroyd take his place. He does offer the ability of being able to play on the left wing.
He could find himself loaned out for a few months to gain first team football experience.

One thing for sure, it is nice to have the riches we now have in the forward deptartment and we await the clubs raids on Premiership clubs for a left back and maybe another centre half.

With these 5 battling for 2 spots it certainly does mean the very end for Jamel Johnson and Tomas Frankowski. These 2 will struggle to make it into the reserve team starting line up now, as the strikers on the bench will fill the role in that team to keep them sharp.
There is an air of disapointment about both of these. Jemal scorched into his Wolves career with goals at Burnley and against Luton and of course the beautiful strike v Sunderland but he couldn’t step up to next level when Keogh arrived.
As for Frankowski, well a million words have been written trying to explain what went wrong there. It seems likely we will be hit by a £1.4m loss on Franek. A stern reminder of the Hoddle days.
