Opinion: Loan exit couldn’t have gone worse for Wolves youngster, snubbed over fitness
Ryan Giles joined Coventry City on loan before the winter transfer window came to a close, but he’s yet to make his debut for the Sky Blues. The 20-year-old spent the first half of the season at Shrewsbury Town, making 25 appearances in all competitions, before returning to Wolverhampton Wanderers in mid-January due to an injury crisis at left-back.
Giles was allowed to leave the club weeks later, however, but his loan move to the Ricoh Arena hasn’t gone to plan. He failed to make the matchday squad in City’s 2-1 win over Bristol Rovers (February 1) while being an unused substitute in the 2-1 win over Bolton Wanderers (February 8) and 1-0 win over Portsmouth (February 11).
Mark Robins told Wolvesbite that Giles has “Premier League quality” but has to get himself fitter before he’ll be considered – the midfielder’s last outing came in Shrewsbury’s FA Cup replay win over Bristol City (January 14). He would have no doubt been a regular back at Shrews had he re-joined them on deadline day, but Giles now has to work hard to get minutes for Coventry.
