Opinion: Loan exit couldn’t have gone worse for 18-year-old winger

|

Callum Thompson joined Bohemians on a season-long loan in January but has so far struggled for playing time under Keith Long. The 18-year-old made the six-month switch to get his first taste of senior football, but he’s not done enough to make Bohemians’ matchday squad.

Thompson has been left out of the 18-man squad for each of the Bohs’ first four Premier League games of the new season – 1-0 defeat to Shamrock Rovers, 2-0 win over Waterford, 2-0 win over Sligo Rovers and 2-0 defeat to Derry City.

At the time of his arrival, Thompson was the 26th player in the first-team and it appears the stiff competition for places has led to him being consistently overlooked. The first two months of his stay at Dalymount Park haven’t quite gone to plan and he could return to Wolves in the summer without having developed at all.

Long has so far preferred Luke Wade-Slater, Kris Twardek, Daniel Grant and Keith Ward over Thompson. The 18-year-old has been playing youth football at Wolves which means he won’t be used to the physicality of the senior game. Thompson may take time to get used to the change before he’ll be given an opportunity to impress. Time will tell.
