Wolverhampton Wanderers missed out on one of their targets in the summer after Mexican defender Edson Alvarez ended up joining Ajax instead, according to reports.

Mexican outlet Record claimed in the summer (via Sport Witness) that both West Ham and Wolves joined Ajax in their attempts to bring the former America player to their clubs, but it was the team from Amsterdam that managed to convince him to join.

However, a window of opportunity looks to have opened once more for Wolves as things haven’t quite gone to plan in the Dutch capital.

The centre half – who has been playing mainly in defensive midfield for the club this season – has only amounted 11 appearances in the Eredivisie, with five of them coming from the bench.

He featured in every Champions League game, but couldn’t help his team get through the group, and also featured in the first leg in the knockout stages of the Europa League away at Getafe – a game they lost 2-0 and eventually got knocked out of after the second leg.

With the 22-year-old not getting the regular football he was expecting, he was linked away from the club heavily in January, despite having a contract until 2024.

Dutch outlet De Telegraaf reported there was ‘concrete’ interest from Tottenham, but the club was not willing to allow him to depart mid-season.

Since then, there have been no signs that things are improving for the player, so without surprise, the rumour mill is beginning to turn in regards to where he will be ending up at the end of the season.

De Telegraaf don’t think that the Dutch champions will be able to recuperate the €15m or so they paid for the defender, so there’s potential for a cheap transfer from Wolves’ perspective.

Sport Witness say that they are unlikely to have forgotten about him, and with his capabilities of playing in a number of positions, he would fit the mould at Molineux.

While his game time suggests that he might not be the player they first thought he was in Mexico, he is still someone who is just 22 and can offer great depth and versatility. On the face of things, it seems like this could be a good little deal if they can get it over the line.
