“Liability” – Many fans slate “very poor” £3.6m signing who’s “just average”

Wolverhampton Wanderers suffered 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United on Wednesday evening, their second loss in as many games, and the defence came in for criticism from supporters. Willy Boly was called out by fans for his abject showing and Romain Saiss was mentioned too. The 30-year-old wasn’t accurate with his distribution and struggled to keep the Blades at bay.

Against Sheff Utd, Saiss played for 90 minutes, had 86 touches, won six aerial duels, completed 74% of his 73 passes, whipped in one cross which didn’t find a teammate, made two tackles, attempted 13 long balls with only 23% accuracy, made six clearances, gave away one foul and made three interceptions.

The Moroccan international joined Wolves from SCO Angers for £3.6m in 2016 and has gone on to make 139 appearances in all competitions, scoring nine goals with three assists. Saiss has been a regular this season, playing in 44 games across the board, but it remains to be seen if he keeps his place in 2020/21.

Wolves are on the hunt for another centre-back and have been linked with Kristoffer Ajer, Gabriel Magalhaes, Christian Luyindama, Ousseynou Ba, Tosin Adarabioyo, Ruben Dias, Diego Llorente, Nicolas N’Koulou, Robin Koch, so Saiss could be on the chopping block. His deal is up in 2021 and may not be renewed.
