Have Wolverhampton Wanderers struck a deal for Crewe Alexandra striker Max Clayton?

The League One club have announced that they have struck a deal with an unnamed English club, for the forward to ‘Get His Career Back On Track’.

Last season Clayton made 18 appearances for Crewe scoring twice, but despite his lack of goals he impressed many further up the football league ladder.

He previously joined Sunderland on trial before Crewe`s reported compensation demands of £1million ended any talks.

The 19-year-old forward then came on trial with Wolves and featured for the final 13 minutes in the 1-1 draw against Celta Vigo during pre-season.

However an agreement wasn’t reached and he moved on, with Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett moving on to other targets.

He next popped up at Bolton, but once again that proposed move was ‘dead in the water’, due to Crewe’s demands.

Well now Crewe have agreed terms with a club and Sunderland, Wolves and Bolton have to be the favourites as he hasn’t been on a trial since.

A statement from the club said: ‘Crewe Alexandra has agreed in principle a compensation package for Max Clayton to continue his career in this country.’

Crewe boss Steve Davis told crewealex.net: “It is a bit out of our hands and any decision rests with Max and his agent but we have been as helpful as we can to him to come to a conclusion. Max needs to get his career up and running again but as a club we also had to receive some decent compensation for all the hard work the likes of Dario and the coaches have done here bringing him through the Academy and into the professional game.’

He continued: “He has had a tough couple of years with the all the expectation on him and then then injury he suffered last year. He didn`t have the impact he would have wanted in League One and we were disappointed that he didn`t sign his contract with us because the club did everything they could to try and keep him.

“If it happens then it will be good for Max because he still has a lot of potential and needs to get his career going again.”
