Former Wolves striker Andy Gray has revealed that he contemplated suicide following his sacking from Sky Sports.

The larger than life Scot, who made over hundred appearances for Wolves in the early 1980’s after his move from Aston Villa, was sacked by Sky a year ago after “unacceptable and offensive behaviour”.

Andy Gray and long-term presenting partner Richard Keys were removed from Sky’s flagship Monday Night Football programme following their off-air comments before the Wolves V Liverpool game in January 2011.

The comments were aimed towards Sian Massey who had been running the line at Molineux, one of very few female officials in the English game.

After hearing the news Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys commented off-air to fellow presenter Andy Gray and said: ‘Somebody better get down there and explain offside to her.’

Andy Gray quipped: ‘women don’t know the offside rule’ and Richard Keys added: ‘of course they don’t’

To compound the comments, Richard Keys went on to add: ‘See charming Karren Brady this morning complaining about sexism? Yeah. Do me a favour, love,’.

After internal investigations the duo were both sacked and moved to talkSPORT.

But the 56-year-old admitted he struggled to come to terms with the repercussions of the incident.

In an interview with the Evening Standard he was asked if he had thought about killing himself? to which he replied: “I would be lying if I said I didn`t. I had never felt like I have felt from January 25th [last year] onwards.’

He went on to add: ‘I wish I’d never said it and, if I caused Sian any problems, then of course I’m terribly disappointed. Richard phoned her, apologised on our behalf and she said, ‘Don’t be so stupid, guys.’

‘In 20 years in studios up and down the country I’ve heard people saying things off camera that would make your hair curl. I do not see myself as sexist. Not in a million years. I have four daughters and I was brought up by a wonderful mother on her own. She’s 91 and is distraught about what happened.’
