Meritan Shabani joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on a three-year deal last summer, but his move to Molineux hasn’t gone to plan.

The 21-year-old was expected to develop in the U23s with a view to progressing to the first-team, but he spent the majority of his debut campaign sidelined with a serious knee injury and will have to start from square one next season.

Shabani was a regular in Wolves’ reserve-team, making six Premier League 2 appearances at the start of the campaign, as per Transfermarkt, scoring two goals.

He started in the U23s’ 2-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion (August 12, 2019), 0-0 draw with Everton (August 18), 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers (August 23), 2-0 defeat to Leicester City (August 30), 2-1 win over Manchester City (September 14) and 2-2 draw with Arsenal (September 20).

The 21-year-old featured in Wolves’ EFL Cup win over Reading (September 25), but he ruptured his cruciate ligament on his senior debut, subsequently underwent surgery and was ruled out for the rest of the season.

In February, Shabani posted a video on Instagram that showed him running on the treadmill. In March, he posted a video on Instagram that showed him undertaking an individual training session. The season has been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but the attacking-midfielder may be closing in on a return when things resume.

Shabani’s debut season at Wolves couldn’t have gone any worse, but he’s on the recovery trail and will hope to make up for lost time.
