Up and down week for Wolves

After the confidence boosting win over Norwich at the weekend , there was a disappointing cup exit for Wolves against Northampton on Tuesday at Molineux. It was a strange old game against the Cobblers though.

Three disallowed goals in the first half and all for marginal offsides, including one dodgy decision. And close calls from shots by Jacobs and Doherty. Wolves could easily have been three up at half time in a 45 minutes they dominated. But some poor defending let Northampton establish a 2 goal lead, before subs Sako and Dicko came on and in no time Wolves were level with Dicko and then Ricketts scoring. But give the cobblers credit fir keeping playing positively and they got back in front with another goal the defence would not be proud about, and hung on for the win. There were some positives on the night with good performances from Evans and Jacobs and Liam McAlinden.

What the game showed was that unless some reinforcements are bought in during August there will be a wish that the players who form the spine of this Wolves team stay clear of injury because they are badly missed when they are not in the team. Ikeme, Batth, McDonald and Dicko are the men concerned and the squad does look thin in attack and defence. Wolves have been linked with a host of strikers and defenders so far this summer but have failed to land anyone yet. And we have to hope there are still irons in the fire to give the cover and competition needed.

Next league game sees a visit to Rotherham on Saturday and it would be great if there is as much action as the two league one games between the sides last season. It was 3-3 at the New York Stadium with Dicko the star for the home team, and then 4-4 at Molineux. Anything similar will make a trip out to Yorkshire well worthwhile.
