Peterborough fans are facing up to the innevetable as Aaron McLean has handed in a transfer request yesterday, although whether this means his departure is imminent remains to be seen.

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony told the Posh website

‘I offered Aaron the most lucrative contract in the history of Peterborough United and Aaron has responded by putting in a transfer request this morning.

‘We have therefore reluctantly placed Aaron Mclean on the transfer list and as stated before, any interested parties will have to pay the club £3m up front plus various add-ons and a sell-out clause for the transfer of his registration.

‘As far as I am concerned, if we do not get the asking price then Aaron will work out the remainder of his Peterborough United contract until 2011.’

The total, very publice price of Arron McLean will tip the scales at £5 million pounds, plus a sell on clause.

For a player who has never played outside the English fourth tier of football.

Nice work if you can get it.

The whole thing smacks of the Marlon King transfer last season where Watford effectively tried to price everyone out of the market, eventually letting him go to Wigan for around £4 million, much less than half of what they initially said they would accept.

Will Posh stick to their guns? History says that for all of the clubs posturing, they will eventually compromise.

But with whom is the question.
