Mick McCarthy isn’t taken to stroking ego’s.

So when the straight talking Yorkshireman heaps praise on a player, you can guarantee it’s well earned.

As is the case with Chris Iwelumo.

And the praise isn’t only forcoming from his manager.

In a matter of two weeks big Chris has managed to turn round the opinions of many fans who who were sceptical about what he could bring to the team.

It’s an over simplification to say goals, as McCarthy pointed out in his post match comments on the official site.

‘With Chris’s physical strength he’s probably the centre forward I’ve been looking for over the last two seasons.

‘I thought we created chances last season but certainly didn’t have a centre forward who wanted to be in the box and head it like Chris does.’ he said.

Iwelumo’s presence isn’t only felt up front, his ariel strength is also prominent defending set pieces, an achilles heel of more than one campaign.

His workrate is prolific to say the least, and he’s capable of turning provider, as Sam Vokes can testify.

But as a striker, there will always be one area on which he will be judged, and the scoresheets from Wolves last few games speak for themselves.

Four goals in three, with an assist.

Didn’t someone create a cult following on those kind of stats?
