Another Rotherham v Wolves thriller?

The aggregate score between Wolves and Rotherham last season was 9-7 over their two league games so will we be in for more of the same when the clubs clash at the New York Stadium on Saturday. This corresponding fixture ended 3-3 with two goals for Dicko for the hosts who had him on loan from Wigan. Later in the season it was 6-4 to Wolves at Molineux with Dicko getting a hat trick for Wolves, so goals may well be on the agenda again this weekend.

What made those games even more remarkable was that Wolves only conceded 31 goals all last season in the league so those games were totally out of character with most Wolves matches. And there have been plenty of other goal feasts between these teams in the match histories with a 4-4 League a Cup draw in 2002, a 6-0 FA cup win for the Millers in the 80s and there were 12 goals in the two league matches in 1965/66. Wolves record in league matches between these clubs has been very dominant. With Rotherham winning just once in the last 19 meetings.

It would be no surprise if Wolves stuck to the same starting 11 that beat Norwich last week, with Michael Jacobs the one who would be most likely to persuade Jackett to make a change. Meanwhile the Millers have bought in a host of free transfer signings over the summer and lost their opening Championship game to an 81st minute Derby winner last weekend.

Meanwhile as we move towards the last two weeks of the transfer window, a Wolves have still only bought in two free transfer signings so far in Van La Parra and Tommy Rowe. They have failed to lure Harry Maguire, Callum Wilson, Chris Wood, Patrick Bamford and Max Clayton and we have to hope there are still irons in the fire. They remain short on cover in defence and up front and that was highlighted when a much changed team were dumped out of the League Cup in the week.

At least they have now offloaded a couple of the players not given squad numbers at the start of the season with Stephen Ward joining Burnley and Forde going to Walsall. But they still have Doyle, Johnson, o’Hara, Boukari, Doumbia and Magreitter draining the finances and that must be a barrier to the team strengthening.

Hopefully there will be movement in and out before the month end, and in the meantime a point or three at Rotherham would keep the momentum going nicely.
