Wolverhampton Wanderers have responded to the Premier League’s request to explain Mick McCarthy’s team selection at Manchester United.

Section E, paragraph 20 of the Premier League Regulations state: ‘In every league match, each participating club shall field a full strength team.’

But while McCarthy made 10 changes to the side that had previously beaten Tottenham, Wolves have defiantly denied claims that they had broken the rules.

Chief executive Jez Moxey told the Express & Star

“In the letter, we contest any accusation that we didn`t field a full-strength team at Old Trafford. We have also questioned why we`re being asked for an explanation given there are examples of other teams doing exactly the same.

“We`re confident of our position on this and have cited the example of three or four other teams doing the same.’
