A bid for Steven Fletcher has been inevitable and it was always going to be highly unlikely that he would stay at Molineux next season.
We’d heard the rumours via the newspapers and other sources and while it didn’t please some of the readers on Vital Wolves………….
(One poster wrote last week:)’I don’t know why a Fletch move is constantly written about on this site. There has not been a single bid for him so I don’t know why it is ‘likely’ he will move on.’
We kept reporting on this point.
It’s why Ståle Solbakken has been looking to bring in his own faces, as the new Wolves gaffer has known all along that some of his bigger names players will depart before the new season.
The news that Kevin Doyle is likely to stay was a big boost, as he could have been likely to follow Fletcher out of the door, but in reality, the 25-year-old Scotland international was never likely to come to the same conclusion as Doyle.
He may well have not rocked the boat and he has to take some credit for keeping a low profile in all of this, but his move away was and is inevitable.
Like we reported weeks ago, a likely destination is Sunderland. Martin O’Neill is a big fan of Fletcher and depending which newspaper you read, their bid is somewhere in the region of £10-12million.
The Daily Mail believe we will hold out for around £15million, while the Independent believe our asking price is somewhat lower at around £10million.
So the question remains, not if Fletcher will leave, but when?
Will Sunderland’s bid be accepted? We are in a strong position with Fletcher holding a two-year contract and if we want to hold out for more money we can do. The problem is, there is little point holding on to an unhappy player, so if a club does come in for Fletcher which he wants to move on to, we do have to seriously consider the offer on the table.
