Wolves Player Ratings, Spurs Reflections & Moments To Remember

|

Wolves secured yet another comeback win at Spurs on Sunday, coming from behind twice to move into the top six and give the impression that this is now where they belong. It was a performance of grit and no little ability that saw them through on the day and they lit up the impressive new stadium in north London with some outstanding play at times.

As we have seen before this season, the game didn’t start out positively and at the time Bergwijn put Spurs ahead in the 13th minute the home team were looking capable of blowing Wolves away as they were cutting open the defence that was looking far from secure, and the visitors were struggling to get any control of the game. But one thing this Wolves team does not do is lie back and accept being second best, and slowly but surely they got their foothold in the game and started to look the most likely team to get the second goal. And the equaliser came just before the half hour mark with a goal from Doherty that had a lot of similarities to the goal that put Spurs ahead.

For the rest of the half, it was mostly Wolves calling the tune but against the run of play, Spurs got back in front just before the break. Aurier was played in on the right and he cut inside Vinagre before curling a shot into the far corner for a fine goal. It was a disappointment to be behind at half time and we wondered if Spurs would be boosted by the late goal and go on to boss the game. But that was far from what happened with Traore scaring the home defence whenever he was on the ball, and Jota and Doherty showing their best form of the season. And it was this pair that combined to put Wolves level a second time with Doherty firing low across the Spurs goal with Jota turning it in from close range on the far post. Vitally this goal came just seconds after Dele Alli had come so close to giving the home team a two goal lead with a header that went inches wide.

From that time on it was Wolves that looked the more likely winners and the deciding goal came in the 73rd minute and was a goal fit to win any game. Jota picked up the ball midway inside his own half, beat two Spurs players before drifting past a couple more then playing in Jimenez on the right of the area, and much like Aurier had done in the first half he cut inside the defender and curled the ball into the far corner. Wolves than played out the final quarter of an hour with little difficulty to secure a memorable win.

Patricio 7 – unlucky to concede the first goal after blocking the first effort, and left helpless for the second. Caught some dangerous crosses to take pressure off the defence.
Boly 6 – at times looked slightly unbalanced on the right of defence.
Coady 7 – another reliable performance from the skipper.
Saiss 7 – proving a reliable player now moved to a defensive position.
Doherty 9 – right back to his best here, scored one and made one and had a fine game in defence and attack.
Neves 7 – not the outstanding play we have seen in recent games but nevertheless played his part.
Moutinho 6 – more loose passes than we are used to seeing from the maestro but delivered some dangerous dead balls.
Vinagre – 5 made a couple of good runs forward but showed some vulnerability in defence and Spurs focused on attacking on his side as a result.
Traore 7 – we’ve become used to a buzz in the air whenever he picks up the ball at Molineux but you could hear the anxiety from the Spurs fans here as he set off on his runs and he played a big part in the second goal. Worrying that his shoulder popped out for the third time in recent games and the medical staff need to find a solution to that.
Jimenez 6 – took his goal superbly but been well below his best in recent games.
Jota 9 – in sparkling form now and this was his best performance of the season.

Neto replaced Traore late on and had another highly impressive cameo.

Wolves are now in the top 6 and apart from Chelsea away on the last day of the season, there are no more matches left against the current Premier League top 7, and the next four games are against Brighton and Bournemouth at home and West Ham and Villa away, so there must be chances there to consolidate or even improve on 6th.
