With Wolverhampton Wanderers already having a commanding 4-0 lead over FC Pyunik following the first leg of the third qualifying round tie, earlier tonight we welcomed them to the Molineux for the return leg.

Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo selected a much changed side for the tie, with John Ruddy appearing between the sticks and we saw a good few youngsters on display, along with full debuts for Jesus Vallejo, Pedro Neto and Patrick Cutrone.

After a goalless first half, we did take the lead through Neto (54) and his effort was quickly built on by fellow highly rated youngsters Morgan Gibbs-White (58) and Ruben Vinagre (64) to give us a very comfortable 7-0 aggregate scoreline inside of the final 30 minutes of the affair. We did round it to 8-0 late on as Diogo Jota added a fourth to match the first leg scoreline, but it was pretty academic really, although credit to the opposition, they certainly showed spirit across both legs.

I guess the biggest surprise from the game was the fact the visitors had more of the ball, even though we otherwise dominated, but a decent runout and through to the next round we go.

Torino next and our Premier League clash against Burnley has been bounced to Sunday, August 25 (4.30pm).

Speaking to the BBC following the result, Santo was gracious in victory and told the press.

“It wasn’t easy. Pyunik started the game very well again. I’ve spoken to their coach and wish them all the best for the future. I thought all my players did a very good job, not just the new players. The second-half display was very good. It was a good game. I think we started the game normally because some players take more time. As the game went by we started performing better and the second half was very, very good. I am pleased with all the team, all the players did a very good job.”
