The excitement of the summer and the anticipation of returning to the Premier League quickly evaporated yesterday afternoon

Wolves lost 2-0 to West Ham on the opening day of the season, goals from Noble and Upson enough to take the points.

Multiple players and multiple formations might have been tried during pre-season, but results like this one will show up any lack of quality that we have as teams will exploit their chances.

‘We began well in the second half but the England keeper-elect kept them in it for a while.’ McCarthy told the BBC.

McCarthy was pleased with the performance but recognised that it was results that matter, especially in the Premier League and went on to add: ‘We’re not a Premier League team, we’re a group of players who won the Championship and earned the right to be here – not many of them have played in the Premier League before.’

A brilliant (note the sarcasm) day was rounded off with Sylvain Ebanks-Blake going off injured.
