Wolves have been linked with former Tottenham defender Jonathan Woodgate and West Ham defenders Matt Upson and James Tomkins over the weekend.

The newspapers know we are interested in strengthening the defence and after failing to bring Matt Mills to Molineux our Mick will obviously move onto new targets, but whether any of these rumours are more than just gossip remains to be seen.

31-year-old Woodgate is a free agent after being released by Spurs. On his day he is one of the best defenders in the country, but he’s prone to injury and Spurs have clearly decided his best days are behind him so he would be a risk.

32-year-old Matthew Upson is also a free agent after letting his contract expire at West Ham. He in my opinion would be a fabulous capture as he would bring great experience to the defence and still has a few more years in him.

But 22-year-old Tomkins is probably the man who ticks more boxes when it comes to what we tend to look for. Obviously he’s young, talented and with potential.

He can play at centre-back or right-back and is currently negotiating a new deal at Upton Park, if we could make a swoop then he could be a good prospect.
