If someone asked you why Wolves are about to be relegated, could you give an answer?
The obvious one is that we haven’t scored enough points to survive.
Break it down further and that’s because we haven’t won enough games, because we haven’t scored enough goals and that we have lost to many games because we’ve conceded to many goals.
Football is simple, but the problems that have surrounded Wolves this season have been complex.
‘There are a million and one reasons why we haven’t been good enough,’ Kightly told the Daily Star.
A fair and frank admission.
While it’s easy to point back to the dismissal of Mick McCarthy and the embarrassing saga that followed in the initial hunt for a new manager, multiple rejections and eventual giving up. I will concede that the warning signs were still there under our Mick.
We might have still gone down with him in charge, personally I don’t think we would have done, but I know others will disagree.
But one thing we will all agree on is that the problems were on show before that 5-1 defeat to West Brom, there might be greater ones now and we might stand no hope of survival, but the warning signs were always there and now the writing is on the wall. It’s simply only a matter of time before relegation is confirmed.
Kightly continued: ‘We’re all gutted and showing fight is the least we can do. We will give it 110 per cent to the last day, even if we are mathematically not able to get out of it.’
So on to next season and back in the Championship. He concluded: ‘We have shown we can do it in the Championship, We are realists. If we do go down, we can bounce back up.’
Vital Wolves Comment: Just who will remain over the summer to see us bounce back up?
