“Wasn’t given a chance”, “Gutted for him” – Some fans say 22 y/o deserved better at Wolves

Patrick Cutrone joined Fiorentina on an 18-month loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, just six months after signing for the Midlands outfit.

He scored and assisted a total of seven goals in 24 games under Nuno Espirito Santo but failed to dethrone Raul Jimenez and racked up less than 900 minutes of playing time.

Despite the 22-year-old failing to settle at Molineux and being shipped to Fiorentina with a buying option included, a lot of fans from We Are Wolves still believe he deserved better and say Cutrone could have been a useful player.

Which club did Wolves sign Raul Jimenez from?

Matt Britnell: “I rated him so much.”

Joe Frost: “He wasn’t given enough of a chance. He was never going to unseat Jimenez as the main striker, so he was only ever going to succeed in a front-two.

“Once Traore started playing consistently well and we played a front-three almost every week, it became clear that we weren’t going to see much of Cutrone.

“Shame that – I liked him. He just didn’t fit the formation and was too keen to be warming the bench all the time.”

Jason Turley: “Looking at that, I think he done well. He was never going to start every game but (was) a very good option and would probably have got better in time.”

Marcus Byrne: “Gutted for him, though wondering, as a result of the virus, we could end up seeing him back here at some point.”

Darrel Farmer: “He worked hard but (wasn’t) good enough. Simple really. Anyone who knows football knows that he ran all day, no one can fault commitment. (He) just wasn’t good enough with the squad we’re evolving into. Hope he does well wherever he ends up in the future.”

Neil McMurray: “Enjoyed watching him. His work rate and running off the ball 1st class. Just needed more playing time. Oh well, we will never know if he could have cut it with us.”

Leeann Morris: “He was a good player, tried keep the game moving. Just a shame (he) never got his breakthrough.”

Cutrone’s goal output was impressive at Wolves, but he couldn’t convince Nuno for more opportunities in the Premier League. Raul Jimenez had a hand in 32 goals in 44 games this season, so he was always going to be preferred in attack over the Italian international.

Cutrone amassed only 291 minutes of Premier League football over 12 appearances, spending the majority of his debut season as an unused substitute. He’s made nine appearances for Fiorentina, scoring and creating a total of two goals, while racking up more playing time in Italy (298 minutes of Serie A football) than he did in England.
