It was a must win, a six pointer, one of those games that could decide our fate come the end of the season.
And for once, it went our way!
Wolves completed the double over Burnley on Saturday. In a match that we controlled, the goals were still fortunate, so our luck in front of goal could be changing. But again we lacked the creativity to create and take a chance ourselves.
The opener came from a Tyrone Mears cock up. With the Burnley defender attempting to head it back to Brian Jensen. But it was weak and Matt Jarvis latched onto the ball, poked it past Jensen and tapped the ball home from an inch out.
The second goal was even more fortunate, Adlene Guedioura shot was going to cause more trouble for the corner flag then Jensen in net. But the ball took a deflection off Clarke Carlisle to wrong foot the Keeper.
Substitute Steven Thompson got one back for Burnley but it was very little too late.
The win boosts Wolves Premier League survival chances. We now sit three points clear of the bottom three, with a game in hand over Burnley and a superior goal difference.
‘It’s tightened it up again with West Ham and Wigan losing and it gives us more of a fighting chance, a bit of confidence.’ McCarthy told the BBC.
He added: ‘We’ve been playing well and I said if we keep playing that way our luck will change. I knew we would get a slice of good fortune by playing that way.’
Vital Wolves Comment: So Mick is vindicated again! It’s good to see a stable side as that in itself breeds confidence.
But this win was massive. We might have tried to play it down before kick off, but there was no denying it. It was must win and thankfully we did.
