Saturday evening saw Wolverhampton Wanderers take a break from Premier League action and we turned our attentions back to the FA Cup with a mouthwatering sixth round tie with Manchester United at the Molineux.

With no fresh injury concerns for head coach Nuno Espirito Santo ahead of the game, Ryan Bennett also came back into his thoughts with his suspension not applying to this competition. Nuno had already called the game the ‘biggest’ in recent history and hopes were high a good 2018/19 campaign would get even better.

And get better they did. We had to weather the storm to begin with as United came out quicker, but we were organised and when we worked our way into the game we largely took control and although both sides had chances, we looked the more likely to break the deadlock.

After a goalless first half, we had United sussed and Raul Jimenez opened the scoring with 20 minutes remaining. Having again weathered their brief step up, Diogo Jota made it 2-0 with a great solo effort as he celebrated his maiden international call up in some style.

The controversy wasn’t over as Lindelof basically assaulted Jota and made contact with the ball after taking him out, and although the referee instantly awarded a red – Video Assistant Referee technology changed it to a yellow?????

The visitors got a goal back in the last minute of stoppage-time but credit to the referee, there was no Fergie-Time.

2-1, we continue in the Cup with a massive victory that will go down in history!

Speaking to the BBC following the fulltime whistle, the gaffer said of our performance on the day.

“I’m very proud of the players. We had composure, shape, good running. Very well done to the boys and it was a fantastic atmosphere. It means a lot because we know how big Wolves were in the 1950s and 1960s and there are people in the stadium who have memories of that. To try to achieve the same is much, much harder now but we will try step by step. We will respect everybody in the semi-finals.”
