The Divock Origi speculation has taken a well-earned break, and Wolverhampton Wanderers are now being tentatively linked with the highest scoring Argentine in Europe.

Not Sergio Aguero or any of the others who may immediately come to mind, but French side Nantes Emiliano Sala.

The 28-year-old is certainly not a household name and I’d never heard of him before stumbling over the speculation this week, but he has scored 11 times in Ligue 1 in 2018/19 in 12 games (12 in 13 including the French League Cup).

His record this year certainly makes him worthy of some headlines and there will be plenty thinking it’s clicked for the striker and he should now be given a shot at the Premier League, but others aren’t so sure and I’m firmly in that camp.

He’s undoubtedly improved and shown good consistency in recent seasons and he is on fire this year, but on Soccerbase’s stats he looks like a ‘Johnny Come Lately’ and he may have now just found his level.

The original speculation surfaced in the Mirror (Nov 18, P49) so it’s standard Sunday paper fare and Crystal Palace are said to be preparing a £15million bid in January, and we get namechecked alongside Everton and West Ham.

I can see exactly where the above fans are coming from even if some of the comments are on the harsh and unnecessary side of life. At that age we’d want a better track history surely, or we’d be looking for younger who had shown the potential to eclipse him.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a name we never hear of again once it’s given the inevitable re-airing in the January window.
