Wolves gaffer Mick McCarthy has blasted the press for their criticism of our Premier League record this season.
Our one aim of the season was to survive in the Premier League. We managed that and not only did we survive we finished in 15th place.
But our record has been attacked by members of the press who have slated our attacking record of just 13 goals at Molineux this season.
‘all these idiots I describe are criticising it – well it`s rubbish.’ McCarthy told the Express & Star.
He added: “Ask Burnley, Hull or Portsmouth whether they`d swap with our position, having only scored 13 goals at home.
“Our aim was to finish above three teams, although we`ve actually finished above more than three.
But while the press were quick to attack our goals record, they also forgot to praise our defensive record!
Mick added: “Is defending not an art? Is keeping clean sheets not important?
“Are running around, tackling and working hard dirty words? I don`t think so.”
Vital Wolves Comment: While I admit I have criticised our lack of goals this season, it has been more of a constructive criticism!
Every team has an area to improve on. Manchester United need to stop being so reliant on Wayne Rooney and they may have a chance of taking the title again next season.
Earlier this season we needed to become harder to beat, we criticised Mick’s tactics of two strikers and called for a tighter unit.
McCarthy recognised that, changed it and that soon brought an up turn in results which have kept us in the Premier League.
Now the balance needs to be found. We do need to score more goals and if we do that, we’ll have a great chance of surviving in the Premier League again and maybe even improving our great finish this season.
