The Telegraph has run its eye over todays teenage talent breaking through, and highlighted one player as having a definate future
Mark Davies has come through the ranks at Wolves , where many hope that he will have a long and illustrious career. Its a measure of how he’s regarded at the club that on this seasons team photo, Davies is sat immediately at Glenn Hoddle’s side. Mark has impressed at every level so far, Captaining England Under 17’s, and appears to be making the transition up to senior level with apparent ease.Of Saturday’s performance The Telegraph said
‘Davies was playing alongside veteran former England captain Paul Ince and outshone his illustrious team-mate.’ high praise indeed.
So the cat’s out the bag. Not too much damage done. But then out of the blue, they drop a bombshell. They go on to say
‘ Academy director Chris Evans has been grooming a truly impressive batch of young players in Wolverhampton. They reached the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup last season, only to be knocked out by Theo Walcott-inspired Southampton on penalties.”
“Davies is the pick of this crop, although Chris Cornes, Martin Riley and Wayne Hennessy have also impressed Hoddle.”
Not news to many in Wolverhampton, but it’s nice to see the Academy recieving recognition for what was a fantastic Cup run last year. Wolves were quick to spot the potential in the quartet, as The Telegraph points out, all four signed four-and-a-half-year contracts last season.
But they save the highest plaudit until last.
‘If Davies maintains this form, the goals will flow and Wolves will have found a player to build a team around.’
The last time anybody said that about a Wolves player, they were talking about Robbie Keane.
