Super agent could prevent key player’s departure by pulling off audacious transfer – opinion

Jorge Mendes has the potential to play a huge part in a deal which could see James Rodriguez join Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer.

According to Marca (via Sport Witness), Mendes – who both has links to Wolves as a club and is Rodriguez’s agent – may try and ‘press’ a deal to the tea from the Black Country.

It is said that with a handful of teams interested in Rodriguez, including the likes of Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton and Arsenal, Wolves are seen as the ‘worst sports project’ f the bunch – but that does not mean that a potential deal is dead in the water.

It doesn’t suggest how exactly the agent could ‘press’ the 28-year-old to pick Molineux ahead of the other sides, but as many in Wolverhampton will be aware, Mendes can do a lot of things which many may consider impossible.

Should we change our tactics for James Rodriguez?

Yes, he's top quality

Yes, he's top quality

No, why change what we're doing

Quantifying just how influential Mendes has been in getting Wolves to where they are now is very hard to do, but considering he is the agent of Nuno Espirito Santo, Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Diogo Jota and many more, I doubt many would like to think where they would be without him.

The signing of James Rodriguez would be one of real intent – and it would be a message to the Arsenals and the Manchester Uniteds of the league which tells them that they are on their level.

In fact, the repercussions of the deal go beyond just adding a former World Cup Golden Boot winner to the ranks, if they can nip Arsenal to the deal it suggests that they are climbing the reputational ladder and breaking into the top 6 territory.

This could be huge when the club are looking to hold onto players. For example, Raul Jimenez is reportedly wanted by both of the aforementioned, but he would be more likely to stay with a player of Rodriguez’s quality joining the club.
