Report: Wolves ‘studying’ another midfielder, may cost €10m-€12m, 19 y/o ‘has Mendes as agent’

According to O Jogo, Wolverhampton Wanderers are ‘studying’ Rodrigo Fernandes, a central midfielder from Sporting CP who ‘has Jorge Mendes’ as an agent.

The Midlands outfit were linked with a move for João Palhinha in May and looked to be closing in on a deal, but they’ve now got their sights set on his 19-year-old teammate.

Fernandes rose through the youth ranks to the Sporting first-team in 2019 and has gone on to make four appearances in all competitions. The Gestifute client has represented the Portuguese national team at U16, U17, U18 and U19 level, so he could have a bright future under the right guidance.

Wolves may be the ideal destination for Fernandes. Nuno Espirito Santo has a number of Portuguese players who could help the 19-year-old fit in – Rui Patricio, Ruben Vinagre, Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Bruno Jordao, Diogo Jotam Pedro Neto and Daniel Podence. He’s also named 17 players aged 21 or under in Wolves’ matchday squad at least once this season.

O Jogo say Wolves may have to pay €10m-€12m, but the ties with Mendes will help them in negotiations. Time will tell. The Midlands outfit signed Luke Matheson (aged 17), Enzo Loiodice (19) and Leonardo Campana (19) in January, so Fernandes should consider them perfect for his development.
