Report: Wolves still owe club £392k after signing 19 y/o in January

|

Wolverhampton Wanderers still owe money to Barcelona SC Guayaquil for Leonardo Campana, according to their club President Carlos Alfaro Moreno. Wolves signed the 19-year-old in the January transfer window and agreed a three-and-a-half-year deal, but it appears they still in arrears over the transfer.

Which club did Wolves sign Raul Jimenez from?

Moreno said in an interview with radio Cobertura Plus FM via Aficion Central: “One of the items to be collected is the training rights of Leonardo Campana, who we have already managed and are in contact with the people of Wolverhampton. It is around US$400k.”

There’s now some discrepancy over Campana’s valuation. Sport Witness highlighted that the Ecuadorian international had left Barcelona SC before his move to Wolves, suggesting his transfer should have been for free.  Transfermarkt also believe there wasn’t a fee attached to the deal.

But it appears Wolves did agree to pay some form of compensation, so they’ll need to make good on their promise – $400k amounts to £392k for the West Midlands outfit to cover.

As per Transfermarkt, Wolves made some expensive purchases in the last two transfer windows – £34m for Raul Jimenez, £17m for Daniel Podence, £16m for Pedro Neto, £16m for Patrick Cutrone – so Campana is likely to be one of their cheapest acquisitions regardless.

Campana is yet to make an appearance for Wolves since the move, but he’s made the matchday squad on two occasions. It remains to be seen if he’ll feature when the season resumes after the Covid-19 pandemic slows down, however, as Nuno Espirito Santo has resisted using him so far.

The Wolves boss was happy to include Campana in his Europa League squad, but he’s overlooked him on the bench and has stuck with more experienced attackers.
