According to Tim Spiers of The Athletic, Wolverhampton Wanderers ‘have an option to extend’ John Ruddy’s deal but ‘haven’t taken it up’.

The 33-year-old is out of contract this summer and could soon depart Molineux on a free transfer, but it remains to be seen if Wolves will retain his services for another year.

It’s also unknown if Ruddy wants to stay as backup to Rui Patricio, having been pushed out of the starting eleven in 2018 when he joined from Sporting CP.

Which club did Wolves sign Raul Jimenez from?

Ruddy has spent three years at Wolves, having joined the Midlands outfit from Norwich City in July, 2017. He’s gone on to make 60 appearances in all competitions, conceding 49 goals and keeping 31 clean sheets.

The England international was a regular in his first season at Molineux, making 45 Championship appearances (36 goals conceded, 24 clean sheets) as Wolves were promoted to the Premier League.

Patricio’s arrival reduced Ruddy to only nine appearances in 2018/19 and six appearances in 2019/20, so few would blame him if he wanted more first-team football elsewhere.

Wolves will be the envy of many Premier League clubs for having Ruddy as a second-choice goalkeeper, but it doesn’t appear they will keep him past this summer.
