It’s been reported this weekend that Wolverhampton Wanderers potentially have advantage over fellow Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Newcastle United when it comes to the chase for goalkeeper Walter Benitez.

The 26-year-old stopper has had a good year out in Ligue 1 for current side Nice, but with only one year remaining on his contract, it’s been claimed that the Argentine is assessing his future options now and Goal suggests we’re in for him.

They say he has the highest save percentage across the season in the French top flight this year and that he’s saved three of five penalties faced, and the pull of the Premier League is obvious for most players.

If we do have a genuine interest in him, the suggestion is if we secure Europa League football next season that would help, but if he’s looking to move on to boost his profile, I’m not so sure he’d want to come in as understudy to Rui Patricio.

So we’ll have to see.

  • I imagine John Ruddy has told Nuno he wants to play regularly next season and not warm the bench and Nuno, being the man he is, has said, ‘Fair enough John. We’ll look for a replacement and you can see what the options are!’
Benitez would be an excellent replacement for Ruddy but as Crystal Palace need a goalkeeper as Spironi is retiring and Hennessey I believe is on the transfer list, Wolves, IF they are interested, will need to move fast.
Should Ruddy decide to stay however, Wolves would still have 2 of the best ‘keepers in the PL!

    • Yup, let him end with proper game time even if it’s not Prem (although given what we saw from him he could do a job over some others in the division) and we look for younger. Palace could be a great shout actually.
