Wolves retain an interest in signing Sporting Lisbon’s Joao Palhinha, although the Portuguese giants are now in talks with the midfielder over a new contract, a report from a print edition of Portuguese outlet A Bola, via Sport Witness, has claimed.

Palhinha has reportedly been a target for Wolves throughout the summer, having seemingly been down the pecking order at Sporting, after spending the last two seasons out on loan with their Primeira Liga rivals Braga.

According to this latest update however, Palhinha is now in talks with Sporting over a new deal with the club, which would apparently secure his future at the Estadio Jose Alvalade until the end of the 2023/24 season.

Despite that, it is still thought that there is interest in Palhinha from England, with Wolves among those who apparently remain keen on the 25-year-old.

But with the sale of the midfielder said to no longer be a priority for Sporting, it has now been suggested that Wolves will have to pay more than the €15million this deal was originally expected to cost them, with the Portuguese club only willing to let the player leave if they receive an offer they can’t refuse.

With that in mind, you have to wonder whether this may effectively be the end of Wolves’ interest in Palhinha.

Having already spent reasonably big on incomings this season, you wonder just how far the club can and will go to secure the services of Palhinha, who has never really made an impact at the club that are now demanding so much for him.

Indeed, the opening day performance at Sheffield United ought to have eased a few nerves with regards to the strength of the current squad, meaning the need and desire to chase signings is unlikely to be rife around Molineux at this moment in time.
