According to Tim Spiers of The Athletic (h/t This is Futbol), Nuno Espirito Santo is looking forward to resuming contract talks with Wolverhampton Wanderers. The football journalist spoke on The Molineux View and said discussions were put on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic but will now resume as football is back.
Spiers said on the podcast: “This is an ongoing issue; it’s been going on for a while. He’s out of contract next summer, as everybody knows. He kind of said: ‘Look, it wasn’t the time to talk about it during the pandemic, there was lots more stuff going on.’ But the key quote was: ‘Now we are back, we’ll have time to talk.’
“So, he’s obviously he’s open to talking. It sounds like that’s going to happen quite soon. He says: ‘It’s so good to be here, we’re still under contract.’ I get absolutely no impression at all that he’s angling for a move. He knew that that question would come up. So I’d imagine that’s a bit of a pre-prepared answer. So, for him to say: ‘Now we’re back we’ll have time to talk,’ I think that’s a very good sign.”
After short-term stints as Malaga (2010) and Panathinaikos’ (2010-2012) goalkeeper coach, Nuno managed Rio Ave FC (2012-2014), Valencia (2014-2015) and FC Porto (2016-2017) before being appointed by Wolves in 2017. He’s presided over 147 games for the Black and Gold, winning 77, drawing 36 and losing 34.
He won promotion to the Premier League (1st in the Championship) in his debut season (2017/18) at Wolves and consolidated in the top-flight (7th in the Premier League) in his second campaign (2018/19). The Midlands outfit are currently sixth in 2019/20 and are chasing a Champions League place, so fans are understandably desperate for Nuno to stay.
The good news is that the 46-year-old seems keen to remain at Molineux too. Jorge Mendes represents Nuno and convinced him to make the switch three years ago, so he also deserves a lot of credit.
