In a blow to all who would like to see racism completely kicked out of the game, a probe into the alleged racist abuse at the Walsall game has found ‘no evidence’ of the incidents.
Wolverhampton Wanderers lodged an official complaint to Walsall and the Football Association over the alleged racist abuse that George Elokobi and Carl Ikeme reported after the game.
The reported incidents took place inside Walsall’s Banks’s Stadium.
The first was aimed at George Elokobi as he warmed up and the second was during the second half behind Goalkeeper Carl Ikeme.
On Monday following the game Wolves released the following statement on Wolves Official Website:
‘Ikeme and Elokobi both reported, to Wolves` management staff, the abuse which, respectively, came from behind the goal in the second half of Saturday`s game at the Banks`s Stadium and during the first half when Elokobi, a substitute, was warming up.
‘The complaint relates to a small number of individuals in the crowd at Saturday`s game and will not sour the good relationship that exists between the two clubs.
‘Both Wolves and Walsall are fiercely committed to stamping out all types of discrimination within football and will vigorously investigate all allegations of racist abuse.
Unfortunately however the case has had to be dropped due to lack of evidence, with the Football Association confirming in writing that there will be no action.
Former Wolves goalkeeper Matt Murray spoke out after the reports and he has now had to move to defend his comments.
“Always knew it would be hard to prove but people needed to be made aware of what happened. People are missing the point. We are a football family and racism is wrong full stop. If a wolves fan said the same I would condemn them too. Some Walsall fans seem to think we`re attacking their club. I stand by what I say. Carl is a good friend and I believe him. End of conversation.” he told the Express & Star.
Vital Wolves remains firmly behind Wolverhampton Wanderers, Matt Murray, George Elokobi and Carl Ikeme stance on this matter.
Any form racist, homophobic or any other abuse has no place in either our club, sport or society.
