Opinion: Wolves should sign 22-year-old in January to strengthen defence

|

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been linked with a move for Aurélio Buta and may have to battle Leicester City, Watford and Southampton for his signature. Despite the stiff competition, however, Wolves should look to sign the 22-year-old as they need to strengthen an important area of the squad.

Buta is a right-back for Royal Antwerp. He joined the Belgian outfit permanently from Benfica in the summer of 2018 and has gone on to make 61 appearances in all competitions, scoring and creating 13 goals. The Portuguese defender has already featured 23 times for Antwerp this season and would improve the Wolves squad if signed.

Should Wolverhampton Wanderers sign Aurélio Buta?

Yes

No

Nuno Espirito Santo has Matt Doherty as his first-choice right-back, but he doesn’t have a natural replacement available – Phil Ofosu-Ayeh is out of favour and sidelined with a knee injury while Jonny Otto has been starting at left-back.

Conor Coady and Ryan Bennett can operate at right-back, but they’re makeshift options at best. As a result, Wolves could benefit from strengthening their defence in January. Buta may have a bright future and would settle in quickly among the Portuguese contingent – Rui Patricio, Ruben Vinagre, Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Bruno Jordao, Diogo Jota and Pedro Neto.
