Wolverhampton Wanderers are short on options at right-back and could benefit from bringing in another defender before the January transfer window closes. Nuno Espirito Santo has Matt Doherty who’s been a regular this season, but Wolves have no other natural right-back to call upon in case of injury.

Ryan Bennett and Conor Coady can fill in, but the pair are natural centre-backs. Jonny Otto can also operate in the role, but he’s a natural left-back. Phil Ofosu-Ayeh may have been a backup option if he wasn’t injured, but Wolves should bite the bullet and sign a right-back before February.

One player who could have been a great addition is Cedric Soares. The £65k-per-week Southampton man was once on Wolves’ radar, but Arsenal are now closing in on his signature.

Cedric is Portuguese and would have fit in well with his fellow countrymen at Molineux (Nuno, Rui Patricio, Ruben Vinagre, Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Bruno Jordao, Diogo Jota, Pedro Neto) and he’d bring a wealth of experience too – 120 Premier League appearances, 33 caps for the national team.

Wolves have missed out on the 28-year-old, however, and may not look to sign another right-back in the coming days. Nuno may have to put square pegs into round holes if Doherty picks up an injury.
